Showcase of Coursework

Showcase: Text

On this page you you are welcome to review some of the coursework that I have completed over the past 2 years during my time in Michigan State University's Master of Arts in Education Degree program. I have also included some projects that I have worked on in my military career. I have organized my work into three distinct categories: Create, Collaborate, and Reflect.

Create: This section is an example of some non-conventional projects I've worked on and how they forced me to be creative.

Collaborate: Working as a member of a team is a skill that was ingrained in me early on in the military. Here are some examples of coursework that I completed as part of a group.

Reflect: Being able to critically review and reevaluate is an irreplaceable life skill. Here are some examples of reflections that have helped me grow as a student and educator.

I created this newsletter to find an additional way to engage the parents of my young athletes. It is an example of how creative coaches need to be in using different media and technology to reach all parents and develop an open line of communication. By the end of practice parents are usually rushed to get home and have dinner going so a newsletter is a great way to spark conversation or share in-depth information.

I created this commentary track to help compare how an experts prior knowledge allows them to understand certain things that a novice might not grasp. While creating this commentary it reminded me that sometimes the experts don't make the best teachers. As educators and coaches we have to remember how it was when we were learning these things were are not teaching so we can relate and communicate it in a way that is effective for a beginner.

This paper identified a common injury with athletes who run. Being a coach you have to be aware of the injuries that are common in your sport and how to prevent them. Creating this paper allowed me to see the connection my military experience has with growing as a coach.

Collaborate

This emergency action plan was a collaboration with the medics on my team. Being able to communicate clearly with others is a large part of being successful when collaborating. This action plan allowed for me to practice those skills getting what I need to complete the information needed for the course to move smoothly. This action plan was a necessity to the course and I could not compete it without collaborating with my medics and it seems like a small things but without it several people would have been affected. negatviely.

This drill assessment was used by myself and my fellow coach to determine how successful each drill we use in practice was. Being a team of coaches we need to be able to communicate what is and isn't working clearly. This assessment allowed each of us to evaluate drills honestly and efficiently so we can focus on the athletes.

Reflect

This paper is a reflection on Biomechanics which is an important part of developing an athlete. As a coach being able to reflect on things you know but also revisit them in a different light helps you grow as a coach. Learning about biomechanics allowed for me to share this information with the parents of my athletes to help them understand why we do certain practices.

This assessment is a review of an athlete that I used to help develop a plan to move the athlete forward.  As a coach it is easy to focus on skills and results. Completing this assessment allowed me to remember how important it is to look at each individual athlete and reflect on how I can best develop them.

This paper focus on how extrinsic and intrinsic factors play into injuries. Being able to examine these factors and manipulate the environment is part of being a successful coach. Taking an injury and analyzing it allowed me to be confident that I can prevent injuries.
